Survivors of Kenville informal settlement fire unable to access grants as IDs lost in blaze

Fire victims from the Kenville informal settlement in Durban North say they have not been able to access their social grants after losing their identity documents and other important cards in the blaze.

Three weeks ago, many people were left homeless after almost 300 shacks were burnt to the ground in the inferno.

Some people in the area rely on child and unemployment grants for survival.

Expressing their frustration, they said losing access to the funds was tantamount to losing their lifeline.

While rebuilding efforts are underway in the informal settlement, the situation still remains dire for many.

Ntombenhle Magwaza, a mother of five, including a one-month-old baby said she could not provide for her children without the grant money.

“Since the fire, I have been without bank cards or an ID, so I couldn’t get the grant money, all was lost in that fire.”

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) spokesperson, Sandy Godlwana, said they were aware of the issue, but said the affected community members must first approach Home Affairs.

“Yes, indeed but unfortunately without an ID it would be difficult to even go to a bank to get that social grant or money withdrawn, it’s even difficult to go to South African Post Offices because they would also require any ID.”
