Eastern Cape floods: Kariega cemeteries severly damaged

Heavy floods have caused severe damage at cemeteries in Kwanobuhle in the Eastern Cape.

Tombstones have collapsed and some graves have sunk as the soil eroded during torrential rains earlier this month.

This left residents fuming and blaming the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, for not having proper drainage systems in place.

Tombstones collapsed, others broke and soil washed away when floods struck the Eastern Cape two weeks ago.

Nelson Mandela Bay officials say they sent teams to assist as soon as they could.

Nelson Mandela Bay Metro’s deputy mayor Babalwa Lobishe says the municipality has a long-term plan to install drainage system in the cemeteries, in order to curb the flooding at the gravesites.
