Kaizer Chiefs 0-2 Orlando Pirates #SowetoDerby

A number of new signings were on show at the FNB Stadium, as Orlando Pirates took the bragging rights in the Soweto Derby after defeating Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday afternoon.

The match got off to an electrifying start with Dumisani Zuma bringing a fine save out of Wayne Sandilands with a move emanating straight from the kick-off.

Chiefs had their second decent attempt on goal in the 11th minute when the ball fell to Bernard Parker on the edge of the box after some neat build-up play from the Glamour Boys, but his well-struck volley went narrowly wide of the right-hand upright.

Pirates took the lead against the run of play in the 18th minute. Justin Shonga nicked the ball off Lorenzo Gordinho and went for goal with Bruce Bvuma getting fingertips to the ball as it hit the crossbar but fell straight back into the path of Augustine Mulenga, who rifled the ball in to the back of net with composure.

Chiefs then had a gilt-edged opportunity to equalise. Some neat interplay which combined slick one-touch movement and passing got Ramahlwe Mphahlele into space down the right-hand side, who squared the ball back across the face of goal for Lazarous Kambole, but Amakhosi’s new signing somehow side-footed over the bar from point-blank range with the goal at his mercy.

The Buccanneers doubled their lead on the half-hour mark and it came through a moment of magic from Bafana Bafana’s Africa Cup of Nations hero Thembinkosi Lorch, who cut inside on to his right foot from the left-wing and spotted Bvuma off his line before curling the ball from 30 yards out in to the top left-hand corner, leaving the Amakhosi goalkeeper with no chance.

It was truly end-to-end stuff in the last ten minutes of the first half, with both sides being carved open with ease as a result of pushing plenty of numbers forward and defensive disorganization.

On the hour mark, Billiat’s sweetly-struck left-footed snapshot forced Sandilands into diving down low to his left to make a brilliant save. Soon after, Mulenga came close with an effort with the outside of his foot that grazed the crossbar.

In the 65th minute, the ball was worked into the box courtesy of some deft combination play between Frosler and Billiat to Zuma, but he skewed his left-footed effort wide of the right-hand upright.

Frosler then brought another fine save out of Sandilands in the 70th minute with a stinging long-range drive. Pirates should have put the result beyond doubt with ten minutes to go when Fortune Makaringe got in behind the Amakhosi defense but selfishly went for goal when he should have squared the ball for Gabadinho Mhango, who would have had a simple tap-in.

When Erick Mathoho’s long-range volley dipped over the bar in the 89th minute, Chiefs fans began leaving the stadium for they knew there was no way back in to the game as Amakhosi’s woes continue.
