Kaizer Chiefs have finished outside the top eight after suffering defeat to Chippa United on the final day of the Absa Premiership season.
Daniel Cardoso and Ntiya-Ntiya were left out of the squad completely to avoid a booking ahead of the Nedbank Cup final, while Erick Mathoho was handed his first start since December.
Both sides had something to play for heading in to the encounter, although it was the hosts who looked more livelier in the opening 15 minutes.
Ernst Middendorp’s charges managed to see more of the ball as the half went on as the likes of Khama Billiat and Reeve Frosler tried their luck from distance.
However, Chiefs fell behind on 31 minutes as Rhulani Manzini caught the Chiefs defenders napping to tap home from six-yards out.
The Soweto giants went forward in search of an equaliser, but they did not do enough to trouble Chippa goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela.
Middendrop respodned with a change at the start of the second half as Andriamirado Andrianarimanana made way for George Maluleka.
Chiefs knew victory would seal their top-eight spot and they pushed for an equaliser in the second stanza Billiat was denied by Mzimela on 65 minutes before Castro nodded over a minute later.
With time winding down, Chiefs were finding it difficult to break down the Chilli Boys in search of an equaliser.
Chiefs nearly bagged an equaliser with for minutes remaining, but Mzimela produced a superb save to keep out Dumisani Zuma’s volley as Chippa held on for the win.
