Electronics including cellphones & TVs, and drugs confiscated from inmates in Sun City Prison raid

Dozens of electronics, including cellphones and TVs, have been confiscated from inmates at the Johannesburg Prison during a massive raid.

Wednesday night’s operation by the Department of Correctional Services officials and police was conducted at a section of the prison housing medium-risk offenders.

The inmates at the facility known as Sun City Prison were pulled out of their cells and thoroughly searched.

Money, cellphones, and contraband were among some of the items confiscated from inmates at the correctional facility during the raid by officials on Wednesday night.

But that’s not all, the Department of Correctional Services National Commissioner Samuel Thobakgale explained: “There are offenders that have got television sets, but they could not produce permits for them to have those television sets.”

Large amounts of marijuana, cigarettes, and smoking materials were also found during the raid.

Thobakgale explained how inmates distribute items like these through the prison: “There are offenders who also have cords and these cords are used to transport contraband through the cells.”

He said those found with illegal items would be criminally charged in conjunction with the Correctional Services Act.
