BATSA says lockdown sales ban made illegal cigarette trade worse

The illicit cigarette trade continues unabated despite efforts by law enforcement agencies to stem the tide.

According to British American Tobacco South Africa, the lockdown sales ban exacerbated an already troubling situation.

British American Tobacco’s John Moloto said: “Both money as well as livelihood if we talk livelihoods across the value chain we are talking about 30,000 livelihoods at risk.

“We have already lost a couple of jobs thousands of jobs between the ban last year and this year we ourselves have had to retrench, and if you have to look at the monetary value of this for 2021 alone we talking almost R20-billion lost to the fiscus.”
