EFF calls for fraud-accused IEC Commissioner to resign

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are calling for the immediate resignation of the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC)’s Commissioner, Nomsa Masuku, following her corruption and fraud scandal.

On Friday, Masuku was arrested for alleged corruption amounting to R1.2 million, following a decade-long investigation into her time as a trustee of Standard Bank’s Adopt a School Trust.

Between 2006 and 2013 Masuku was the head of the Corporate Social Investment unit at Standard Bank and allegedly used the trust to afford family and friends bursaries.

EFF spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys said: “If Masuku was truly committed to the Constitution and the principles of democracy she professes to uphold as a commissioner, she would step down. This resignation would allow her to address these serious allegations personally, without further tarnishing the reputation of the IEC.”

Masuku first appeared at the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Friday, and was released on R20,000 bail.
