MEC Spokesperson Labels Idols twins ugly
Transport and Public Works MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela’s spokesperson, Ntomboxolo Makoba-Somdaka, has stirred controversy for implying that the Qwabe twins are bad looking.
In a move that has irked displeasure in some social circles, she updated her WhatsApp status to emotionally and psychologically abuse Idols contestants, the Qwabe twins, by labelling them “Zimbi ke ezi twins #Idols”, which roughly translates to “these twins are ugly”.
As if to demean the twins’ popularity, Somdaka’s unfortunate sentiments, came after Viggy and Virginia Qwabe had made it to the top 17 of Idols on Sunday.
On Monday, Makoba-Somdaka ignored attempts to reach her for a comment regarding the matter, she could not respond text messages sent to her, neither was she reachable on her mobile phone.
Contacted for his opinion, Madikizela refused to be drawn into the issue, saying the sentiments had nothing to do with him whatsoever.
“She posted that during her own time on the weekend, not in her work capacity.
“I cannot even understand how that can become a story. Please contact her, do not include me,” he said.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time in which influential South African personalities have invited public lash on themselves owing to bad statements.
Recently, Gqom artist Babes Wodumo saw herself under fire from the public on social media after she uploaded a video clip making fun of Lady Zamar’s acne.
To make matters worse, she could be heard mocking Lady Zamar while zooming in to show the acne on her face. An unfortunate action that social media users could not find to be funny.
In an extreme scenario an Elsies River High School pupil was on Monday said to have tried to commit suicide after allegedly being bullied at school and told she was “ugly”.
The Grade 9 girl was so devastated by the sentiments, to the extent of trying to take her own life, she had to be hospitalised after taking an undisclosed number of tablets in the attempt to kill herself.
Regarding the matter, Provincial education department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond was alleged to have said the case was reported to the district office and had been brought to the attention of a psychologist.
Ilitha Labantu spokesperson Siyabulela Monakali has taken a swipe at woman-on-woman antagonism following the two cases, saying it is not a good thing at all.
“We expect women to have each other’s backs, especially in a society where women are vulnerable.
“Cyber bullying takes emotional tolls. If the older generation is not celebrating the young ones, how do you expect the younger generation to be bold and confident?” She said.
