Hundreds left homeless after fire rips through Durban informal settlement

A cold front has brought bitter cold to many parts of the country and for residents of Lacey Road informal settlement in Durban, it could not have come at a worse time. A fire raged through the area on Friday afternoon leaving hundreds homeless.

About 75 families are trying to salvage what they can from the debris where their homes once stood, and rebuild where possible.

No injuries were reported but most of the residents of the informal settlement have lost everything they had.

eThekwini councillor Thanduxolo Sabelo said a tent will be erected on Saturday as a temporary shelter.

25 families will receive building materials on the weekend and the remainder will get theirs on Tuesday. He has promised residents they will all have formal houses soon.
