Statistics SA said that consumers looking to get their coffee and tea fix were still paying high prices for hot beverages.
The rates for instant coffee and black tea remain in double-digit territory, despite a drop in the annual inflation for non-alcoholic beverages.
Hot beverages, vegetables, and fruit were among the few categories that didn’t soften in April.
Stats SA released the latest inflation reading on Wednesday.
The overall annual consumer inflation has slowed for a second consecutive month, easing from 5.3% in March to 5.2% in April.
Housing and utilities, food and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as transport, were the main drivers behind the headline rate in April.
Despite there being no good news for coffee or tea lovers just yet, Stats SA said consumers with a sweet tooth were in for a treat at the tills after the rate for sugar, sweets, and desserts cooled.
Chief director for price statistics at Stats SA Patrick Kelly: “Bread and cereal inflation continued to slow, declining for a 12th consecutive month in April. The annual rate eased to 4,3% from 5,0% in March. Bread flour, cake flour, ready-mix flour, white bread, pasta, rusks, savoury biscuits, and maize meal are cheaper than a year ago.”
Other notable changes include a jump in hotel prices between March and April.
