The hearings into the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MPs who stormed the stage during President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Joint State of the Nation Address (SONA) are expected to start today. The Powers and Privileges Committee of Parliament will conduct the hearings.
The committee will investigate whether the EFF MPs breached the Powers, Privileges and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act for interrupting the President’s annual address to the nation.
The Phala Phala cloud hanging over Ramaphosa’s head resulted in these interruptions. The EFF MPs who were ordered to leave the House during the Joint SONA disobeyed the instruction.
Instead, EFF MPs took their protest against the President by storming the stage and holding placards before they were forcefully removed by security forces and the Parliamentary Protection Services.
