Murder linked to hate crime

A murder has left a community in shock and sparked fears of hate crime.

Orange Farm residents have once again been left reeling after the body of a 28-year-old lesbian woman was found buried in a shallow grave.

Nomvula Chenene went missing in December. Her remains were discovered a week ago.

She is the sister of former Orlando Pirates Bennet Chenene.

There are fears that there could be more victims of a similar crime.

Emotions ran high in court as the Chenene family came face to face with their daughter’s alleged killer.

34-year-old Sizwe Buthelezi opted to abandon his bail bid.

But that did little to calm the community members who were baying for his blood.

For the Chenene family, healing and closure are still a long way away as they await the results of a DNA test.

And with a testing backlog, they’ve been told it could take weeks, if not months.
