A mob attack has left one dead in Gomora on Thursday, 23 March.
This is after the suspect was assaulted by the community of Alexandra, east of Joburg.
Gauteng police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo, told the publication that the deceased and two of his friends were accused by the community of killing their friend and burying him in a shallow grave.
The trio were beaten and according to a resident, one of the suspects confessed to the community that they killed their friend but could not remember where they buried him.
The two suspects were saved by police and arrested but later released after one suspect died in hospital.
Masondo confirmed the suspects were released because they never confessed to the police that they killed their friend.
“The case wasn’t enrolled, and the family of the missing young man is still searching for him,” he said.
The mother of the missing friend, who asked not to be named, said she’s scared of saying anything that might make her a target.
She said she wants her son, last seen in January 2023, found.
“I just want to find my son and avoid all this trouble.”
Masondo said the search for the missing young man continues.
He urged community members to call the police should they have any information that might help find the missing man.
He said police opened a murder case following the incident.
One of the patrollers told the publication that on Tuesday, 21 March, community members went to dig at a place in Alexandra but didn’t find anything.
“One of the community members suggested they go there as they heard that they might have buried him there,” he said.
