Gauteng Transport Department investigating licencing corruption

The Gauteng Transport Department says it will be investigating corruption at Licence Testing Centres. The department has appointed a forensic company to look into claims that some of their officials are working in syndicates to manipulate the booking of slots.

Mamabolo addressed the media on Tuesday, announcing the investigation along with measures aimed at resolving the backlog. Last week the department extended the renewal of driver’s licences to March 2022.

“For any solution you put forward there could be a risk. We are fighting one of the most highly organised criminal syndicates that has been making lots of money from an inefficient and extremely corrupt system,” Mamabolo said. Definitely, they are going to try to take chances but there are two types of driving schools. There are driving schools that as alleged are bogus driving schools, that are allegedly run by officials working with third parties and there are legitimate businesses, entrepreneurs that are running proper driving schools.

“The syndicates that might attack the system, we are guaranteed by the RTMC, that the eNATIS system is in a secure location, it’s in an area that is classified as a national key point. And the system is highly protected.

“That does not mean that the people who have been making money from these [syndicates] will not attack it so that risk remains. It is for the IT technicians and experts to protect the system further.
