The DA’s federal executive has announced Solly Msimanga as its candidate for Gauteng premier.
Party leader Mmusi Maimane made the announcement on Sunday.
There were nine contenders for the position, but Msimanga beat out Gauteng provincial legislature member Makashule Gana, MP Ghaleb Cachalia and national spokesperson Refiloe Nt’sheke.
Maimane said Msimanga will remain the mayor of Tshwane during his campaign to be the premier candidate of the DA.
“If we feel that the people of Tshwane are being comprised I’ll be the first person to step and speak on the issue,” said Maimane.
Gauteng is likely to be a key battleground in the 2019 general election.
The DA is already running the metros of Johannesburg and Tshwane through coalitions.
