Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela reflects on career

Outgoing Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela says despite significant strides in combating crime, illegal firearms and illegal mining remain major concerns. Mawela’s five-year term of contract as the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner comes to an end on 31st January this year. He was briefing the media in Parktown, Johannesburg, on his retirement and term in office.

“Although the achievement and successes contained in the report are celebrated, the following areas of concern remain stubborn and challenging and will continue to receive focus and attention. Proliferation of illegal firearms, mass shooting incidents, vigilantism, illegal mining, damage to essential infrastructure. Diminished trust in the police by the community which continue to affect police and community relations negatively.
