Gauteng Education Nears Full Placement of Grade 1 and Grade 8 Learners for 2026

The Gauteng Education Department has announced significant progress in placing learners for the 2026 academic year, confirming that more than 95% of Grade 1 and Grade 8 applicants have already been successfully accommodated in public schools across the province.

According to the department, Grade 1 placements currently stand at 97%, while Grade 8 placements have reached just over 94%. These figures reflect the ongoing effort by education officials to manage growing learner demand in Gauteng, South Africa’s most populous province.

Education authorities say the placement process remains active, with officials working to ensure that every eligible learner secures a spot before the start of the 2026 school year.

Gauteng Education Faces Pressure in High-Growth Areas

Despite the strong overall placement figures, Gauteng Education has acknowledged that certain regions are under intense pressure due to rapid population growth and limited school infrastructure. Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said the city of Ekurhuleni is experiencing the most strain, particularly in areas such as Kempton Park, Tembisa, and Alberton.

“These are high-density areas where demand for school placements continues to rise every year,” Mabona explained. “As a result, many schools are reaching their maximum capacity much earlier in the placement cycle.”

The department confirmed that more than 700 schools across the province have already reached full placement capacity. This has made the final stages of the placement process increasingly complex, especially for parents applying late or seeking placement at schools in high-demand zones.

Mabona stressed that while the pressure is significant, the department remains committed to fulfilling its obligation to place every learner.

“We are working tirelessly to make sure that all learners are placed as per what we have committed,” he said. “We want to appeal to parents and guardians to remain patient. The placement process will continue until all learners are accommodated.”

The Gauteng Education Department has implemented several measures to manage the demand, including the use of mobile classrooms, reconfiguration of school catchment areas, and the identification of additional spaces within existing schools. Officials are also working closely with district offices to monitor capacity on a daily basis and redirect learners where necessary.

In recent years, Gauteng has faced recurring challenges with school placements, driven by internal migration, urbanisation, and the province’s economic pull. Thousands of families relocate to Gauteng annually in search of employment opportunities, placing added pressure on public services, particularly education.

To address these long-term challenges, the department has embarked on an infrastructure expansion programme that includes the construction of new schools and the upgrading of existing facilities. However, officials acknowledge that infrastructure development often lags behind population growth, making placement season a recurring stress point.

Parents have been encouraged to consider alternative placement options when their first-choice schools are full. Gauteng Education has reiterated that all public schools follow the same national curriculum and standards, even though resources and facilities may vary.

The department has also urged parents to ensure that their application information is accurate and complete, as missing documentation can delay placements. Officials say many of the outstanding cases involve late applications or incomplete submissions, which take longer to process.

Education analysts say the current placement figures indicate improved planning compared to previous years, when thousands of learners were still unplaced late into the year. However, they caution that sustained investment in school infrastructure and long-term urban planning will be essential to keep pace with Gauteng’s growing population.

As the placement process continues, Gauteng Education has committed to regular public updates to keep parents informed of progress. District offices remain open to assist parents with queries, while online systems continue to be used to track and manage applications.

For now, education officials say the focus remains on the remaining learners who still need placement, with the department confident that full placement will be achieved before the start of the 2026 academic year.
