The Gauteng Education Department says it is difficult to deal with violence outside school premises.
It is now calling on residents to work with them to reduce violence in communities.
It comes after a pupil was stabbed outside the Dinokaneng Secondary School.
He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
It is the second stabbing at the school in an area reported to be riddled with gang violence.
