Over 10, 000 people have been arrested in Gauteng for breaking lockdown regulations. The province has recorded 930 coronavirus cases, the highest in the country but authorities say the lockdown has been effective.
With a lockdown in place, you need a reason for being out and about but the provincial government doesn’t think it’s a laughing matter.
“So far, 10,126 suspects have been arrested and 9,624 cases opened. 7,481 suspects are currently awaiting to appear in court,” said Gauteng Premier David Makhura.
The province remains the epicentre of the coronavirus in South Africa.
“Currently, 101 infected patients have been hospitalized, 15 of whom are in Intensive Care Unit ICU. This means 1.6 percent of all those infected have required intensive care,” the premier said.
However, authorities say it’s not all gloom and doom.
“We see that more than 50 percent of the infected people are recovering and one thing that makes us more confident and more excited is that most of these infected individuals still have got a very mild disease some them remain asymptomatic for a long period of time,” said Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku.
The Gauteng Health Department says over 196,000 people have now been screened across the province.
Over 2,500 have been referred for testing.
