City of Cape Town Driving Licence Testing Centres (DLTCs) have recorded over 400 incidents where fraudulent documents for learner’s and driving licence applications were submitted.
The city said this happened between July 2023 and June 2024.
According to the Metro, over 297 driving licences were flagged and 16 of them were confirmed to be fake, and revoked.
The municipality said unfit drivers add to road carnage that could have possibly been prevented.
MMC for Safety and Security JP Smith said six people were recently arrested for licence fraud at Goodwood Driving Licence Testing Centre.
“Fraud is a reality and our DLTCs are not exempt. Some people continue to buy their licences, while others will risk presenting fake documents in the hope of securing a licence.
“In the past, we’ve also seen attempts to cheat on learner’s licence tests, but thanks to far more stringent checks and balances, such incidents are few and far between these days.”
