Five suspects appeared in court in connection with murders at Fort Hare University last year.
The case has been postponed to 4 May for bail.
The arrests were a breakthrough for police following an investigating team established by national police officials.
The arrests on Monday were linked to the murder of Mboneli Vesele, the bodyguard of the UFH vice-chancellor Sakhela Buhlungu.
Police Minister Bheki Cele and Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola will be in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday to meet with university management.
