FlySafair launches Mauritius route

South African low-cost carrier FlySafair will start flying to Mauritius in December, following a long wait for the island nation to ease travel restrictions.

Mauritius ended its ban on South African travellers earlier in September, coinciding with the island’s reopening to tourism which enters its final phase on Friday 1 October. South Africans have been restricted from visiting the island nation throughout the pandemic. Flights between the two countries are expected to resume in October, with Air Mauritius leading the charge and its first flight departing OR Tambo International Airport on Friday.

Under the new rules which come into effect on Friday, travellers to Mauritius will be allowed to explore the entire island and all it has to offer, so long as they are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and present a negative PCR test result.
FlySafair confirmed that it will operate two weekly flights to Mauritius – on Tuesday and Saturday – using the Boeing 737-800 aircraft. Flights from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport will depart at 09:00 and return flights from Mauritius’ Ramgoolam International Airport will leave at 16:15.

Flights between the two countries have a travel time of around four hours, with no stops in between. The first flight on this new route departs OR Tambo on 11 December. Bookings for FlySafair’s Mauritius route opened on Tuesday, with the lowest one-way fare starting at R4,950.

FlySafair’s launch prices compete well with other airlines offering direct flights between the two countries, namely British Airways, operated by Comair, and Air Mauritius. British Airways’ December flights start at R7,266, but drop to as low as R4,266 in the new year. Excluding the first and last days of the month, Air Mauritius’ December schedule starts at R6,293.
