eThekwini Municipality hands over R21 million contract to rebuild flood-collapsed road

The eThekwini Municipality has handed over a R21 million contract to rebuild a main road that was collapsed by floods a year ago.

Road P457 in Ntuzuma, Durban North, collapsed after floods in the coastal area last year.

Early last month, a 26-year-old woman died after unknowingly driving into a massive sinkhole on the road.

It’s been over a year since this road collapsed, leading to the tragic death of 26-year-old Noxolo Khumalo.

It forms part of the infrastructure damaged by the 2022 floods.

Ethekwini Municipality Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said restoring the road will take six months.

“In a period of six months, we anticipate that this restoration of this project will be done, we estimate that period is a minimum period in case there other major interventions that are required structurally.”

Ethekwini was the most affected area by last year’s floods.
