State needs more time to probe case against eThekwini municipal workers over unprotected strike

The State said it needed more time to investigate the case against eThekwini municipal workers linked to an unprotected strike in March 2024.

Thirteen people were arrested as a result of the industrial action where workers demanded salary increases from the KwaZulu-Natal metro.

The group, currently out on R2,000 bail each, returned to the Durban Magistrates Court on Friday.

However, the State had to adjourn the matter due to outstanding investigations.

The group was charged with public violence as well as tampering with, damaging or destroying essential infrastructure.

The State alleged that they blocked roads with rocks and rubble and also burnt tyres and bins.

Some of them were spotted on CCTV footage destroying property belonging to the eThekwini Municipality.

The city previously said that more arrests were eminent in this case, as various law enforcement agencies were said to be working on the matter.
