Eskom has welcomed a drop in attacks on its electrical infrastructure – including mini-substations, transformers and high-voltage pylons – compared to last year.
However, the power utility says the problem remains widespread, with infrastructure vandalism and theft costing over R221 million in the current financial year.

The entity also commended the police for a recent intelligence-driven operation that led to the arrest of six suspects found with stolen infrastructure worth R1.5 million.
The group appeared in the Ngwelezane Magistrates Court on Monday.
Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena is urging communities to report suspicious activity to help protect critical infrastructure.
“These acts compromise electricity supply and place additional strain on Eskom’s ability to serve its customers. Eskom calls on all community members to take an active role in protecting electrical infrastructure.”
