Former Eskom CEO André de Ruyter is expected to make a formal submission to Parliament this week, on alleged corruption during his tenure at the power utility.
De Ruyter made headlines at the end of February when he claimed African National Congress (ANC) politicians turned a blind eye to his complaints about corruption in an interview with eNCA.
Eskom will also appear before Parliament to brief it on the latest tariff hike granted to it by the South African National Energy Regulator (Nersa).
Since De Ruyter dropped his corruption bombshells, Parliament’s standing committee on public accounts (Scopa) had been considering whether to initiate an inquiry on the request of the ANC.
But first, the committee said it wanted to hear from De Ruyter.
Through his lawyer, he indicated he would avail himself virtually on Wednesday.
Scopa chairperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa: “He’s got a submission he’s going to be making and he’s going to speak to that, and then he will field questions.”
On the same day, Eskom will be before the select committee on public enterprises, to brief it on the 2023/24 tariff increase of 12.74%.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Parliament’s rules committee will be discussing what to do about the events that unfolded on the night of the State of the Nation Address (Sona), when members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) were forcefully removed from Cape Town City Hall, after storming onto the stage in protest against President Cyril Ramaphosa.
