Emergency Operations Centre for SADC needed urgently: Pandor

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Dr Naledi Pandor says there’s an urgent need for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Humanitarian and Emergency Operations Centre to become operational in order to deal with disasters in the region. The Minister was speaking at the SADC Council of Ministers’ Meeting in Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The council oversees the functioning and development of SADC and ensures that policies and decisions are implemented. Pandor says floods in the SADC region are worrying.

“The setting up of the centre has been made more urgent by the recent experiences of South Africa, of Malawi and of Mozambique. We have a perennial problem of flooding and very heavy rains and flooding. So I think it is peak that we have a regional centre that can provide early warning and that is able to have very quick responses.”
