The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said talks with President Cyril Ramaphosa about the 2023 general elections have begun.
The commission made the announcement Tuesday, as it unveiled its elections programme, theme, and logo.
South Africans will take to the polls in 2024 to elect leadership for national and provincial elections.
Over 26.2 million people are currently on the voter’s roll, with 95% of them appearing with complete addresses next to their names. The commission hopes more people will register to vote in the coming months.
The authority to determine the voting date lies with the president.
The IEC’s chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo said the 2024 polls are of a profound historical significance.
This comes as South Africa marks 30 years of electoral democracy. Mamabolo said the 6th administration will come to a close in May.
“The 7th parliament of the democratic era must be elected within 90 days from that date, hence our window period for our national elections stretches from May to the middle of August in 2024,” said Mamabolo.
Mamabolo added the IEC expects the national and provincial elections to be harmonized.
The IEC will hold a voter registration weekend throughout the country on the 18th and 19th of November.
