Six provinces reported COVID-19 related deaths in the last 24 hours.
The countrywide death toll has now topped 8,500.
The Health Department reported a 173 new coronavirus related deaths.
Fourty-five patients died in Mpumalanga, 37 in Gauteng, 31 from the Western Cape, 28 from the North West, 20 in the Eastern Cape, and 12 in KZN.
Sixty-nine percent of people who tested positive have already recovered.
Only around 5,400 new cases have been confirmed in the latest health department report.
Less than 22,000 tests were conducted since the last report – much lower than the almost 35,000 tests reported in the previous 24-hour cycle.
