South Africans are being urged to not let their guard down as COVID-19 cases increase.
The National Health Laboratory Services has described the rise in cases as a resurgence phase.
It says people need to be responsible and follow all precautionary measures.
“Do we call this a wave or do we just call it a resurgence of infections and everybody is moving towards let’s just look at resurgence of infections because it is going to take a while to say, do we then use the same criteria that we used for the last four waves to say when we reach about 30% of previous infections then that is a wave or when we see the number of infections per 100 000,” she said Koleka Mlisana from the National Health Laboratory Services.
“But for all practical purposes, for me, I would say that we are now in the resurgence phase but it is not as steep as we have seen it with Omicron.”
South Africa has recorded 3,785 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours.
Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal account for most of the cases in the country.
