In the biggest fake news story of 2019 so far, Mabala Noise has distanced itself from a Drake poster that was doing the rounds on social media this week
The poster claimed that the Canadian rapper would be performing in South Africa in March 2019 and it also suggested that the event was put together by Mabala Noise. MTV Base, BET, the Patrice Motsepe Foundation and Kaya FM were all listed as media partners while the Ticketpro Dome was listed as the event venue.
Although the poster gained a lot of traction in a short space of time, it didn’t take long for people to realise that it was a fake advertisement.
For starters, the artwork was poorly drafted (compare this to, say, the Global Citizen artwork that accompanied the concert’s announcement) while there was no mention of any such concert on Drake’s social media pages.

It didn’t take long for the brands to stop associating themselves with the fake event. Mabala Noise led the way in slamming the fake poster. Their spokesperson, Tumi Moatshe dismissed the event and the advertisement altogether when they said:
“There is no such concert. It is just a fake. If you look at the poster clearly, you can see all the errors on it. It is a cheap fake. We would announce such a concert ourselves.”
Meanwhile, MTV Base and BET released a statement to the media on Tuesday afternoon as they also distanced themselves from the event
“It has been brought to our attention that BET Africa and MTV Base have been listed as partners for the below event. Should you see any further promotion relating to this, please be advised that we are not partnering, and have no affiliation with the below.”
It seems as if fake event posters (with fake media partners) are becoming a trend to watch out for in 2019. A similar poster advertising a Lil Wayne and Tyga concert was quickly dismissed as fake towards the end of 2018.
There are some advertisements & promotional material on social media which state that the Motsepe Foundation is presenting or is associated with the Lil’ Wayne & Tyga New Year’s Eve Cruise 2018.
Kindly note that the Motsepe Foundation is not presenting or associated with….
