African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) president, Collen Malatji, has accused police officers in Soshanguve of colluding with criminals to run the township into the ground.
Malatji led a march to the Soshanguve police station on Wednesday, voicing frustration over lawlessness in the Pretoria North community.
The recent murder of five-year-old Ditebogo Phalane, who was shot outside his home over a week ago, has left residents outraged.
Malatji urged Police Minister Bheki Cele to root out corrupt officers from the Soshanguve police station.
Malatji said corrupt officers were partially to blame for the recent spike in gun-related crimes in the community.
“Criminals no longer fear the law in this country. We don’t want law enforcement agencies to be friends of criminals when they are supposed to enforce the law.”
But local pastor, Yolanda Mabuse, said the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) should be roped in to assist with crime.
“We really need a game changer and we really think the SANDF will be one of the game changers.”
Cele assured community members that his men in blue were committed to keeping the township safe.
