Coal miners partner with Eskom

Eskom is partnering with coal miners Exxaro and Seriti Resources to develop renewable energy projects.

The companies are the largest coal suppliers to the power utility. They contribute about 80 percent of Eskom’s annual coal supply. Phase 1 of the envisaged project will see the construction of various solar energy facilities.

Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter says this agreement will contribute to the utility’s efforts to achieve its aim of having a net-zero emissions status by 2050. Exxaro and Seriti collectively contribute over 80 percent of Eskom’s coal supply a year.
