Chief Charumbira to be disciplined for supporting ZANU PF

The High Court of Zimbabwe has upheld an order compelling the Minister of local government July Moyo to institute disciplinary on the Councilor of Chiefs President of his remarks calling for all chiefs to support ZANU PF in 2018 elections.

Chief Charumbira had applied for rescission of judgment against the Election Resource Centre High Court Order (May 2018) compelling him to publicly withdraw in writing comments made before 2018 harmonised elections urging traditional leaders to support ZANU PF and its Presidential candidate.

The court ruled that Chief Charumbira has to retract his statements about chiefs supporting political parties in writing in a publication with national circulation within 7 days of being served with the order.

The Minister of Local Government must also begin disciplinary proceedings against Chief Charumbira for misconduct.

Chief Charumbira and Council of Chiefs were also ordered to pay the costs of the Chamber Application and the court application.
