Cape Town man gets life sentence for killing cop

A 27-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a police officer in Nyanga, four years ago.

Aviwe Ndwanyana was sentenced in the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday after he was convicted in June.

Thirty-year-old Constable Asanda Siyoko and her colleagues, attached to the Nyanga Crime Prevention Unit, were on patrol in the New Rest informal settlement in June 2020 when they came under fire.

Siyoko died on arrival at the hospital.

“The Western provincial head of the Hawks, Major General Makgato has welcomed the sentencing of Aviwe Ndwanyana (27) to life imprisonment for the murder of a police officer.

“The team comprising of the Hawks, Nyanga SAPS [South African Police Service] members, and crime intelligence immediately launched a manhunt and Ndwanyana was subsequently arrested on 8 June 2020. He was remanded in custody until his sentence,” said the Hawks’ Siyabulela Vukubi.
