Very Sad: 2 pupils perish in horror bus accident

Two pupils from Ntabankulu High School in the Eastern Cape died on their way to school on Friday morning, 13 August. This comes after a bus they were travelling in overturned at Mantlaneni Location in Ntabankulu.

Unathi Binqose, the spokesman for Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana-Gxothiwe, said the bus had nine occupants.

Binqose said seven other occupants, including the driver, were rushed to hospital with injuries.

“It is alleged that the driver lost control of the bus and it overturned. The one learner was declared dead on the scene while the other died on arrival in hospital,” he said.

Binqose said: “Sadly, the two learners that have lost their lives in this accident are a boy and a girl. Both were doing grade 11. They must have been between 16 and 17 years old,” he said.

Binqose said Tikana-Gxothiwe has called for a thorough investigation into the accident.

He said the MEC has extended her deepest condolences to the pupils’ families.

Police spokesman, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana had not yet responded to a inquiry sent by the time of going to print.
