A fatal shooting that left three people dead in Braamfontein has raised concerns about safety around university precincts.
Two students from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) were caught in the Thursday afternoon crossfire.
One of them, an 18-year-old who was in his second year of studies died, while another was injured.
Two other people were also killed while inside a car that was parked outside a student accommodation building in Braamfontein.
The South African Union of Students (SAUS) has sounded the alarm on the rise in crime within student areas.
Union spokesperson Asive Dlanjwa:
“Now one might argue that the student population is about 1.6 million but we further argue that reports suggest that 10% of all GBV cases in the country are concentrated within the student populace.”
Meanwhile, Joburg council speaker Margaret Arnolds has called on police to find the gunmen behind the deadly shooting.
