Musician Barney Rachabane has died

Jazz musician Barney Rachabane has died. The 75-year-old saxophonist, who was in the forefront of the jazz music industry in the 1960s, died on Saturday, 13 November.
His family announced his passing with a statement released on social media.

“It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of Barney Rachabane. He passed away on Saturday, 13 November. Rachabane’s untimely passing was due to natural causes. More details will be shared in due course,” the family wrote.

Barney has worked with the likes of Hugh Masekela, Caiphus Semenya, Abdullah Ibrahim and American musician, Paul Simon among others. Fans and colleagues sent out messages of condolences and tributes the late star.

The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) also sent a message to his family.
“RiSA would like to send condolences to the Rachabane family, friends and fans. May your soul rest in peace Bra Barney Rachabane,” they wrote.

Patrick Lee-Thorp wrote: “RIP Barney Rachabane – Always mild-mannered and willing to help. We worked together in the mid-1970s when he participated in the live and recorded projects of Pacific Express. He went on to become one of the most respected jazz musicians in SA. Thank you, Barney.”

Radio and TV presenter Nothemba Madumo wrote: “Sad to hear the news of the passing of SA’s saxophonist #GiantOfJazz Barney Rachabane #RIPSaxophone. We just lost a whole #historyofjazzFlag of South Africa. Condolences to the family.”
