President Cyril Ramaphosa is delivering the keynote address on the first day of the South African Local Government Association’s (SALGA) two-day virtual National Members Assembly on Thursday.
Ramaphosa said the latest auditor’s report points out the serious problems municipalities are facing when it comes to governance and finances.
The 2018/2019 Auditor-General report found that only 20 of the country’s more than 250 municipalities received clean audits for that period, which translates to less than 8%.
Ramaphosa said it appeared the situation was getting worse.
“We simply cannot afford for local government to fail, because when local government fails, provincial government fails, and ultimately national government fails. It is too important to our people and their lives and our developmental objectives of this country.”
However, he said many of the problems local governments were faced with were inherited but he was still urging municipalities to do better.
