Cops are hunting for a group of armed men who bombed five ATMs in one day. The thugs went on a rampage and bombed five ATMs in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni on Thursday, 16 December.
The ATM bombers first started by blowing up the drop-in safe inside a petrol station store.
Cops are appealing for help to trace and stop the thugs.
Sergeant Rufus Tema of Thokoza Police Station said they are investigating a case of ATM bombing and malicious damage to property at Engen garage on the corner of Khumalo and Yende streets, Phola Park.
“According to one of the garage employees, about 15 heavily armed male suspects who were travelling in a Toyota Quantum stopped at the petrol station.
Some of the suspects entered the shop while others remained outside.
“They pointed firearms (AK-47s and pistols) at the employees and bombed the drop-in safe in the shop and four ATMs outside,” said Tema.
Tema said the thugs reportedly left the drop-in safe without any cash. They then went out of the shop and bombed the ATMs on the premises of the petrol station.
Tema said the thugs bombed another ATM at Phuthaditjaba Centre in Thokoza extension 2.
“The suspects managed to flee the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.”
He said no injuries were reported. Residents from nearby houses ran to the crime scene soon after the thugs left to see if they could get money.
“We heard a loud sound and saw them attack the ATMs,” said a resident.
Anyone with information on the suspects can call 08600 10111.
