Prisoner commits suicide at Mangaung Correctional Centre

The Department of Correctional Services (DSC) has confirmed a suicide incident by an inmate at Mangaung Correctional Centre on Monday morning in the Free State.

DCS Spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says the inmate was serving life after being sentenced in 2013 for murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and family violence.

He says the inmate climbed to the top of the building and threw himself to the ground. Nxumalo says an internal hospital treated him before he was rushed to an outside hospital, where he died.

Mangaung Correctional Centre is the same facility where serial rapist and murderer Thabo Bester escaped through a staged suicide in which he was allegedly assisted by employees of the facility. That escape happened in May last year.
