At least 22 killed, dozens wounded in Maine mass shooting

A mass shooting in the US State of Maine has claimed more than 22 lives with reports of dozens more wounded and a death toll that’s expected to rise. State Police and the local sheriff earlier reported on an active shooter without providing further details.

The carnage comes after a man reportedly shot people at several locations, including at a bowling alley in the town of Lewiston, in the US North East.

Reports suggest as many as 50 are injured, the death toll could also be revised. Lewiston is a city of 37 000 people, about 56km north of Maine’s largest city Portland.

Shootings happened at three locations, including a restaurant, a Walmart distribution centre and a ten-pin bowling center. Police have advised residents and businesses to lock their doors, take shelter in places and stay off the streets. Law enforcement has posted a picture of the suspect holding an assault-style rifle and a vehicle they are looking for. The local medical centre has confirmed it is dealing with a mass casualty event.
