Armed guards to be deployed to some schools

The Gauteng Education Department is doing all in its power to ensure the safety and security of pupils and teachers in schools.

Department Spokesperson, Steve Mabona says it’s identified 245 schools regarded as at high risk of experiencing crime and violence in the area.

He says they will be deploying armed security guards and installing cameras at 75 of these schools to help curb crime.

Mabona says the success of the project relies on community members working alongside the police and reporting any wrongdoing or criminal behavior.

He said, “we have identified 245 schools which we deemed to be high-risk areas…”

“In the sense that there’s a level of violence that is high in the area, violence among learners, our educators are scared to discipline learners.”

“As a matter of urgency, we felt the 75 schools in that list need armed security personnel.”

“We are saying to the community let’s work together, let’s blow the whistle.”
