Angelique Coetzee has stepped down as Chairperson of the South African Medical Association (SAMA). While she remains a board member, her resignation comes with immediate effect. This follows a recent public apology from her and SAMA over a comment she made regarding admissions to medical school.
Coetzee said admission is highly politicised and that race mattered more than academic performance.
The board did accept her apology at the time. The Vice-Chairperson of the board Dr Mvuyisi Mzukwa assumed the role on Thursday.
The board will now contemplate a permanent replacement.
