Police, SANDF makes presence felt in Alex #LockdownSA

Police officers and members of the SANDF have been seen dispersing crowds in Alexandra who are in the streets despite the new regulations to halt the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Police have been seen arresting non-compliant people and patrolling the streets in an effort to force compliance with the regulations.

South Africa is officially under lockdown for the next three weeks. The historical move is an attempt to curb the spread of the coronavirus in the country. In some areas, people have gathered, acting against the lockdown measures.


Alexandra township, long lines outside grocery stores have formed and people have reported queueing from 5 am on Friday morning. Some residents have shared that they are aware that the queues to get food and essentials are unsafe, but they have no other choice.

Many people have been paid at the end of the month and have not had the opportunity to shop before the lockdown came into effect. One person asked that the government concentrate on crowd control instead of closing shops that provide essentials to the community.
