ANC Gauteng dismisses AfriForum’s call to remove Lesufi

The ANC in Gauteng has dismissed AfriForum’s call for the removal of Gauteng’s MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi as a “desperate attempt to resist transformation at all costs.”

The ANC was responding to AfriForum’s letter to Gauteng Premier, David Makhura demanding Lesufi to be fired.

“The racially inspired, ill-fated & misguided campaign to remove the MEC for Education & Youth Development Cde Panyaza Lesufi from office is nothing but a desperate attempt to resist transformation at all costs,” the party said in a statement.
Afriforum said Lesufi had created chaos in schools with the admissions process.

The department is in consultation with all schools in the province to increase classroom capacity to accommodate the pupils who still need to be placed for 2020.

The department says this has helped cut the list of children waiting to be placed from over 14,600 to about 12,000.

“It is a disgrace that the Premier still allows Lesufi to hold office despite the damage he has already inflicted on the Gauteng education system and on social cohesion in the country.
The school admissions process is chaotic and he does not accept responsibility for his share in this crisis ‒ on the contrary, his latest announcements of so-called solutions only aggravate the situation, as the plans are impracticable and deprive parents of the right to decide about their children’s place, quality and language of education themselves,” said AfriForum spokesperson, Henk Maree.

AfriForum also laid criminal charges against Edward Mosuwe, Head of the Gauteng Education Department.

According to AfriForum, the charges relate to the Auditor-General’s report of 2017/2018, which found that more than R900-million of irregular expenditure had been incurred by the Department during the past financial year.

“The Department is overall guilty of irregular expenses to the value of more than R2-billion when the amounts of previous years are included,” said AfriForum.

The organization says it will intensify its campaign to have Lesufi removed.
