ANC Gauteng desperately forming doomsday coalitions with EFF & PA, says John Steenhuisen

Democratic Alliance (DA) federal leader John Steenhuisen said a vote for the African National Congress (ANC) was a vote for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), as he accused the governing party of already showing that it would do anything to cling to power.

Steenhuisen was speaking at his party’s Gauteng provincial congress in Boksburg on Saturday.

He described the deteriorating state of the country’s economic hub, claiming it was a symbol of the ANC’s betrayal.

Gauteng will be the battleground in next year’s general elections, with many parties seeking to push the ruling party out of power.

The DA is hoping its moonshot pact which will see a grand coalition with smaller parties will clinch control of the province.

Steenhuisen also hit out at the ANC for hosting a national dialogue on coalitions last week.

“And make no mistake about it, the ANC knows that its days are numbered, that’s why as Ivan [Meyer] said, they convened a whole dialogue in Cape Town on coalitions. A governing party admitting that they know that the days of their majority are over.”

Steenhuisen illustrating his fears for the near future, told delegates a wounded buffalo is the most dangerous animal in the bush.

He said the ANC is already showing how it will do anything to cling onto power in Gauteng next year.

“By forming doomsday coalitions with the EFF and Patriotic Alliance (PA) in some of the municipalities in this province. Panyaza Lesufi is on record for saying he wants to bring the same doomsday coalition to the provincial government next year, where the ANC and the EFF will seek to work with the treacherous and the parties like the PA.”

MORE PEOPLE TO JOIN COALITION TALKS

Meanwhile, the DA leader revealed that more people would be joining in its talks around a moonshot coalition next week.

At least seven political parties are due to hold exploratory talks about forming a pre-elections agreement next week.

Following his re-election, Steenhuisen announced in April that the DA would join hands with like-minded parties to form a grand coalition.

As its choice of venue, his party has selected Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park where the CODESA talks which led to the 1994 breakthrough took place.

Steenhuisen said this is an opportunity to set the country on a new path.

“We are gonna make sure that the moonshot pact coalition brings out a new and better future for the people of South Africa.

“And we hope to emerge from there, with an agreement, with a group of parties, represented in the pact, will focus on providing not just a way to get the ANC [African National Congress] out of power, but providing an alternative to the ANC.”
