ANC-aligned Sasco gains ground in South Africa’s SRC elections

Months after South Africa’s watershed general elections, political parties are in a fierce battle across institutions of higher learning.

The ANC-aligned South African Students Congress (Sasco) is seemingly outperforming its opponents and regaining lost ground at some universities.

It managed to claw back some support previously lost to the EFF Student Command.

Newcomer, uMkhonto weSizwe Party, also took its chances in some of the elections which have been taking place over the past two weeks.

SRC (Student Representative Council) elections are usually seen as a litmus test of what lies ahead when it comes to electoral support.

So far, Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT), Wits, University of Limpopo, and the University of the Free State are among the universities that have successfully held their annual polls.

The EFF Student Command has so far won the University of Limpopo and tied with the ANC-aligned Sasco at TUT.

Last year, the red berets received the most votes at TUT, but seems to have been affected by the arrival of the MK party’s youth league.

Sasco, which lost MUT and Wits to the EFF student command, has now won back control of both institutions.

EFF Student Command president Sihle Lonzi said that the structure will reflect on its losses and try and pull up its socks.

“Obviously we are disappointed, although it is not a lot of campuses, but even losing one campus we are governing is still a cause for concern.”

The University of Cape Town, which an EFF SRC currently governs will announce its election results later on Saturday.
