A popular Amapiano and Afro-pop artist has been arrested for allegedly raping a minor. The 24-year-old singer was detained by the police in Stilfontein, North West, on a charge of rape but the publication cannot name him as he has not pleaded.
He apparently spent New Year’s Day under police guard at Klerksdorp Tshepong Hospital.
The SunTeam understands the popular singer, originally from the Eastern Cape, was allegedly assaulted by the victim’s family, leaving him with a head injury.
On Tuesday 3 January, he made a brief appearance in the Stilfontein Magistrates Court.
He told the court the person who assaulted him took his cell phone.
According to a source, the police arrested the singer on 28 December and he was escorted to the hospital the following day.
Acting hospital spokesman Tefo Tladi confirmed that the singer was admitted with a head injury on 29 December, and said he was discharged in a stable condition on Monday 2 January.
Provincial police spokeswoman Colonel Adele Myburgh confirmed he was arrested after being accused of raping a 14-year-old girl.
During his appearance in court, he was advised to have an attorney for his bail application.
He told the court he would bring his lawyer when he returned on Thursday 5 January.
The SunTeam has learnt that the singer has opened an assault case against the person who allegedly attacked him.
At the time of going to print, the assault case had not yet been registered as the the investigating officer was waiting for a doctor’s letter.
