The NICD says new infections are now spreading among all age groups.
Initially, young people between 10 and 29 were the main ones affected but now infections are moving to higher age groups.
“We’re seeing increases in all districts… the age proportion is mostly 10 to 19 and 20-29 [years],” the NICD’s Dr Michelle Groome said.
“We’re seeing increasing positivity rate in all of the age groups…it’s shifting into the higher age groups”
There’s also a sharp increase in hospital admissions of under 5s.
Walida Jassat of the NICD says this is a new trend and wasn’t seen in the third wave.
